What is Sleep Apnea? Can it cause death?

Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition in which a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep, leading to a lack of oxygen to the brain and other vital organs. This can result in a range of health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and even death.

Many people with sleep apnea are unaware of their condition because it often occurs during sleep and may not be accompanied by obvious symptoms. However, if left untreated, sleep apnea can have serious consequences for a person’s health and well-being.

One way to diagnose sleep apnea is through a sleep study test also known as a polysomnography test, which is a non-invasive procedure that monitors a person’s breathing and other bodily functions during sleep. The results of the test can help healthcare providers determine the severity of the condition and develop a treatment plan that may include lifestyle changes, medications, or the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine.

It is important to take sleep apnea seriously and seek medical attention if you suspect that you or a loved one may have this condition. Without proper treatment, sleep apnea can lead to serious health problems that can affect your quality of life and even be life-threatening. By undergoing a sleep study test, you can get the help you need to manage your condition and improve your overall health and well-being.

While sleep apnea can affect persons or any age, seniors are more prone to this condition. At ElderLiving, we offer a full range of affordable & professional sleep study tests in the comfort of your own home, help you analyse your results and recommend a suitable CPAP/BiPAP machine based on your health needs.

What is a Home Sleep Study?

A sleep study, otherwise known as a polysomnography test is an assessment that can be used to check up on how well you sleep and to diagnose sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. It involves wearing sleep tracking equipment, so your sleep data can be recorded and evaluated by a Pune sleep expert doctor.

Most sleep studies are performed to diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea, and occasionally Upper Airways Resistance Syndrome. Sometimes they can be used to diagnose other diseases such as Restless Legs Syndrome, or Epilepsy.

Why should I do a sleep test?

It’s hard to know what’s going on when you’re asleep. Are you getting the rest you need to be at your best during the day? If you snore or wake up tired, taking a sleep test will help you find out about your sleep.

What are signs that you aren’t getting enough healthy sleep

You might not think you need more sleep, but your body is probably telling you something different if you:

  • Feel a need to drink caffeine throughout the day to stay alert and energized
  • Fall asleep easily during TV shows, car rides, or other activities before bedtime
  • Oversleep on weekends (to catch up from the week)
  • Have trouble controlling your appetite or losing weight
  • Find it difficult to focus and concentrate
  • Don’t have as much energy for exercise or playing with children
  • Have less interest in sex

What is the difference between lab sleep test & home sleep test?

The difference in satisfaction between users who complete their test at home rather than in a lab is clear, but the difference in price is even more distinct! The average cost of a traditional lab sleep test is ten times as expensive as a Home Sleep Test, and that’s only the low end of lab testing! What can a sleep test diagnose?

A modern sleep test will give you a range of sleep data, including your heart rate, body movement and oxygen levels, which can be used to aid in the diagnosis of sleep conditions such as sleep apnea.

If at any time you require medical advice, we recommend you have a chat with your doctor.

What are the different types of sleep tests?

Home sleep testing is now available as an alternative to a sleep laboratory visit. Portable monitoring equipment is used to assess your sleep in the comfort of your own bed.

Whereas sleep laboratory studies using a minimum of 7 channels are classified as a Level 1 study, home studies are classified as Level 2, 3 and 4 depending on the number of channels recorded.

A Level 2 home study records a minimum of 7 channels of data and measures actual sleep time, which is the same as a full sleep study conducted in a laboratory without a sleep technologist being needed for this home study.

Most home studies are Level 3 HSAT (Home Sleep Apnea Studies), which usually record 4 to 7 channels and do not measure sleep.

A Level 4 home study records only 1 or 2 channels that typically includes oximetry.

Algorithms are used to guesstimate the amount of sleep for studies that do not actually measure sleep, and to calculate the number of apneic events per hour of sleep that is required for diagnosis of the sleep apnea syndrome. Home sleep testing is not recommended if you have serious conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) or Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). If a sleep study is advisable yet significant health problems prevent you from meeting the standards for portable monitoring, then follow-up with your personal physician advising testing in a local sleep laboratory may be recommended.
